HOT OFF THE PRESS

Our story about how our small forest community in the western Blue Mountains of NSW was hit by the  2019 Black Summer Bushfires, and rose to self-organise, build cohesion, and get ready for the next disaster. We have learnt so much, that we felt a responsibility to document our journey for the next mob!

Lessons Learned in Disasters - the 2019 2020 Bushfires_FINAL.pdf

The Report aims to help our community and other communities better prepare by identifying:

  • the factors to consider in assessing your bushfire risk
  • the immediate post-fire needs of a community, and
  • a menu of possible community projects to better prepare residents.

Our report is also meant to frame the expectations and broader strategies of community organisations, by providing an understanding of “who is who in the zoo” of emergency services, and the limitations of the institutional paradigms within which community organisations are working, particularly in NSW.

To that end, we hope we might inform government policy and programs by:

  • illustrating how community-led approaches can fill the gaps in the emergency Planning, Preparation, Response and Recovery (PPRR) cycle
  • identifying institutional barriers to community-led efforts, and
  • identifying alternative approaches and recommendations to address these institutional barriers.
