Imagine how our lives would be different if a tunnel had been built under the Darling Causeway, providing a direct route to Sydney! In the late 1850s it was proposed to build a track from the Grose River Gorge, from the Nepean River near Yarramundi. The gorge was considered a possible route for the railway with a tunnel under the Darling Causeway to Hartley Vale being envisaged.
The track was indeed built along the Grose, with parts of it still very visible. This walk will head from the Darling Causeway, along Surveyors Creek to the Grose River, with us returning as we near Ikara Head. There is a very enjoyable short summary on the history of the track at https://infobluemountains.net.au/history/engineers.htm
It is a 4 km walk along a fairly even track surface. There is a steady climb of 300m required on the return journey. Suitable for beginners with reasonable coordination / fitness.
You will need to wear runners, and to bring your hat, a small day pack, a light raincoat, a spare warm top, sunscreen, a litre of water and a snack.
